teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi

The multi-sensory art experience space designed by teamLab Architects spans a total area of 17,000 sqm. teamLab Phenomena is based on teamLab’s new concept, Environmental Phenomena, featuring artworks created by phenomena resulting from unique environments. The artworks in teamLab Phenomena do not exist independently but are created by the environment which produces the various phenomena that creates the artworks. teamLab Phenomena reversed our usual workflow. First, a concept to use organic shapes and environmental phenomena was established. We began by designing spaces based on human behavior, then chose a sea-side site, visible from the bridge. Later, Abu Dhabi's MZ Architects designed the facade after we finalized the inner artwork volumes. This is the opposite of the typical design process. The exterior of the building reflects the shapes of the inner volumes of the artworks. The intricate 3D curves required precise data exchange between stakeholders. Computational design aided in the automated production of construction drawings. There is a space where huge, pillar-like objects stand like a forest. Viewers perceive them as pillars, but they are not actually structural supports for the building. These are installations that break the view and create depth, stimulating curiosity. They also serve a purpose to house equipment such as projectors and sensors. In other words, structurally, it is a vast space without structural elements inside the space. Many professionals from around the world collaborated over the last seven years to create the best possible environment for our artwork experience. A world where digital art is transformed into a space that multiple people can experience simultaneously. The organically shaped space eliminates the boundary between humans and the space. In this world, the boundary between digital and real becomes less distinct, and the artwork shifts from something to be viewed to an environment to be experienced. This is not a digital space but an abstracted form of nature itself. Designed by award-winning architects MZ ARCHITECTS as the Lead Architect, alongside teamLab Architects as the Collaborative Architect, the venue exemplifies a seamless fusion of architectural innovation and artistic vision, ensuring a truly exceptional exhibition setting.
