Architecture for gardens
“What is architecture to gardens?”
People do not want architecture to be a presence that obstructs the garden, and yet at the same time want to appreciate the garden from the architecture.
Such is the contradictory relationship between garden and architecture.
Gardens and architecture have a long history, and in Kyoto in particular there has long been a kind of architecture to look out over gardens. This kind of architecture is so optimized for the garden that one might mistake it for existing solely for the purpose of viewing the garden.
Among them, there is one temple in particular that I like called Kōtō-in, located in Daitokuji temple.
One passes through a bamboo grove, unexpectedly entering a building through a hidden entrance concealed by bamboos. Stepping into a room, a garden suddenly appears. In that moment, the exterior of the building is virtually unperceived. The building does not exist in your consciousness between entering and leaving the building.
For this cafe, we attempted to create a contemporary version of the architecture of Kōtō-in temple in a form that could only be created particularly for this garden.
For a garden, architecture is out of sight. We aimed for the building to have an entrance that is not recognizable. When one enters the transparent entrance that suddenly appears in the field and goes inside, there is a cafe with a view of the garden. To those inside, the cafe appears as if it were simply part of the field.
There is no architecture for those who are spending time in the garden, and there is a garden for those who drink tea while viewing the garden.
Unlike the art experience in the museum where art and everyday life are separated, and completely unlike the idea of making art part of daily life, such as placing paintings in the living room, this is an experience that allows art to maintain its inherent intensity while transforming daily life into a part of the art itself.
